CONCRETE SOLUTION MAKES IMPACT ON WOLFSPEED’S IPD PROJECT

By Chad Hensley, P.E., EVP of Business Management

Wayne Brothers is proud to be part of the team constructing North Carolina based Wolfspeed’s, new factory in Siler City, NC.  Once completed, it will be the largest silicon carbide materials facility in the world. To ensure the project’s success, Wolfspeed implemented Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), a method involving engagement of the engineering, architectural, and construction teams early in the design phase. This proactive approach allowed each of the IPD team members to bring experience and solutions to the table which would help ensure the client’s financial and functional success.  Some of the following needs were considered when recommending solutions:

  • A highly durable concrete floor to be able to withstand repetitive heavy industrial traffic among other specialty needs
  • Sustainability focus for LEED Certification
  • Faster construction schedule
  • Maximize value of construction costs

Our Solution

Wayne Brothers presented the solution to use MEGASLAB, an engineered concrete slab system. This provided Wolfspeed with a durable, low carbon and high-performance concrete slab to meet the facility and construction needs.

The Results

  • + 40% reduction in C02
  • 70% fewer joints
  • Reduction of slab thickness from 9 to 6 inches
  • Highest classification of abrasion resistance
  • Elimination of surface hardener
  • Elimination of steel reinforcing
  • Accelerated speed of installation and cure time
  • Superior adhesion of epoxy coatings
  • Low shrinkage, reduced potential for cracking and curling

Our commitment to excellence and innovative solutions, such as the installation of MEGASLAB, not only exceeded Wolfspeed’s expectations but also sets a new standard in the industry. As we look forward to witnessing the success of this project, we remain dedicated to providing cutting-edge solutions that address the unique challenges of our advanced manufacturing clients.
