Scope of Work

Wayne Brothers delivered a combined scope of Sitework + Utilities and Turnkey Concrete services for this large-scale manufacturing facility expansion, completing the second of two major press pits for the same General Contractor and End User. The Sitework scope covered grading a 60-acre site, deep pit excavation, mass fill, rock blasting, and all related sitework. The Concrete scope included construction of the press pit, hydraulic room, and building foundations and slabs.

Unique Challenges

The project’s central feature — a 60-foot-deep press pit — required innovative excavation techniques to meet tight scheduling demands. The original plan called for the pit to be fully sloped at 1.5:1, which would have delayed other critical foundations. By modeling the excavation in detail, our VDC team identified a more efficient approach: combining a sloped excavation for the upper 30 feet with vertically shored soil nailing and shotcrete for the bottom 30 feet. This hybrid method allowed other foundation work to proceed simultaneously, saving time and reducing cost. To ensure a precise excavation for the 13-foot-thick one-sided concrete wall, our team used line drilling and controlled rock blasting, then carefully shaped the rock face with hammer hoes and rock drills to match the exact layout required.
