Scope of Work

Wayne Brothers was contracted to install a new furnace foundation inside an active recycling facility, with work spanning demolition, excavation, soil milling, micropiles, soil nail installation, and concrete placement for the foundation walls, utility trenches, a shored slab, and a slab on grade. Our team coordinated demolition and excavation activities alongside the geostructural work required for the soil nails, soil milling, and micropile installation, followed by the concrete scope across the foundation, walls, and both slabs. The project required close coordination with facility operations, since the recycling center's furnace remained running throughout construction.

Unique Challenges

Working inside a live recycling facility meant performing work while the plant's furnace continued running, exposing crews to extreme heat conditions. The pit's tight footprint didn't allow for sloped excavation banks, so our team installed soil nails along the pit walls to stabilize the sides and keep crews safe. The micropiles were installed directly onto the existing foundation due to how close the new work sat to it. Limited access inside building meant excavation had to be done utilizing WD60 buggies to remove spoils. To hit the schedule, our team worked around the clock in two shifts over a 15-day duration.
