MAJOR GROWTH FOR CIVIL IN LOW COUNTRY
By Jim Rhodes, Senior Vice President, Civil

Wayne Brothers’ Civil Group is up and running in the Low Country and we are here to stay! In the summer of 2023, WB broke ground on its Low Country Operations Center in Walterboro, SC. While our Sitework division has previously taken on select projects in the region, we had yet to establish a permanent presence with local hires and dedicated equipment—until now.
That all changed when we broke ground on the new Operations Center in the region. Once completed this will give us a home base in the Low Country and allow us to grow our civil group team, increase service offerings, and strengthen our local presence.
Strong Foundation
Between our Sitework and Geostructural divisions, the Civil Group has over $80 million in backlog.
By Thomas Meador, Project Executive
As the former Project Director for Lane Construction, I oversaw the largest section of the Complete 540 Phase 1 road project. The project was a $450+ million design-build effort involving 29 bridges and 7 million cubic yards of excavation/embankment affecting over 200 different land parcels. Hence, it was awarded the No.1 road project in 2024 by Roads and Bridges Magazine
The sheer scale of this project was challenging on its own but building it during the pandemic (2020-2024) added a new layer of complexity; with labor shortages and supply chain disruptions. Below are a few key lessons learned that can apply to projects of any size.
It’s All About Relationships
This success strategy cannot be overstated enough. In construction, success starts with relationships. Whether it’s governmental agencies, project owners, engineers, or construction crews, trust is the foundation.
Congratulations to everyone who has earned a recent promotion!
