Scope of Work

Wayne Brothers was awarded the site utilities, mass excavation, and ground improvements for the 250,000 SF addition to the historic Cabarrus County Courthouse in downtown Concord, NC. Through a public bid with Messer Construction, our Civil & Infrastructure teams demolished existing hardscape and relocated storm, water, and sewer lines to prepare for excavation. After reaching the building pad grades, our Geostructural Solutions crew installed stone columns designed in-house by our Specialty Contractor Design-Build team, Southern Engineering.

Unique Challenges

Working in a tight downtown footprint around an active courthouse required careful planning and sequencing. Relocating over 1,000 linear feet of utilities while maintaining service and safely excavating more than 30,000 cubic yards of soil to reach subgrade 20 feet below road level was a major coordination effort. Despite differing soil conditions that required additional testing and design modifications, our teams met the aggressive production schedule. The project’s success led to Wayne Brothers securing the second phase of site work, including additional underground utilities, fine grading, and new hardscapes.
